Types of senior care in the Omaha area

Six care types, and the Nebraska license or certification behind each one.

Home›Care types

What types of senior care are available around Omaha?

Omaha-area families choose among assisted living (Nebraska ALFs), memory care (Alzheimer's units and endorsed ALFs, plus nursing home special care units), adult day services, nursing homes, in-home care from home health agencies or private caregivers, PACE, and hospice.

Independent living with no care services needs no ALF license. Each guide below explains what the license allows, what it costs at Nebraska's 2025 medians, and how many providers the rosters show in the five counties.

How do I choose the right care type?

Work from needs, not labels: daily help plus medication assistance points to an ALF, wandering points to a dementia unit, continuous skilled nursing points to a nursing home, and a parent who mainly needs daytime supervision while a caregiver works may fit adult day services.

Our comparisons put two options side by side, and the situation guides start from what just happened.

Which care types do Medicare or Nebraska Medicaid pay for?

Medicare pays for short skilled nursing stays after a qualifying inpatient admission, intermittent home health and hospice; Nebraska Medicaid pays for nursing home care, and its AD Waiver pays for personal care, adult day and assisted living services, but not ALF room and board.

PACE covers all Medicare and Medicaid services for enrolled members. VA Aid and Attendance can help veterans and surviving spouses with any of these costs.
