What is assisted living in Nebraska?

Assisted living in Nebraska is care in a licensed assisted-living facility: shelter, food and help with personal care, daily activities and health maintenance for four or more residents who need or want it because of age, illness or disability, under a written resident service agreement.

The DHHS roster of October 15, 2026 lists 79 licensed assisted-living facilities in the five Omaha-area counties with 5,432 licensed beds, out of 277 ALFs and 13,957 beds statewide; 53 are in Douglas County. ALFs range from small residences of under ten beds to communities with more than 150. ALF staff may provide medications through registered medication aides under RN-reviewed policies, but may not themselves provide complex nursing interventions; residents who need those arrange home health or hospice.

Who is assisted living right for?

Assisted living suits someone who needs help with bathing, dressing, medications or meals, benefits from supervision and company, and whose medical condition is stable or predictably changing; it is not designed for someone who needs a nurse's judgment around the clock.

Many residents move in after a fall, a hospital stay or the loss of a spouse. A resident with dementia may live in ordinary assisted living while the service agreement can meet their needs safely, and move to a memory care unit later.

What does assisted living cost in Omaha?

CareScout's 2025 Nebraska median is $6,350 a month ($76,200 a year) for a private one-bedroom; Omaha prices vary with apartment size, building age and care level, and many communities add charges for medication management and higher care levels.

36 of the 79 licensed ALFs in the five Omaha-area counties (46%) are marked on the DHHS roster of October 15, 2026 as certified for the Medicaid Aged and Disabled Waiver. For eligible residents in those buildings, the AD Waiver pays for services while the resident pays room and board.

What should Omaha families ask an assisted living facility first?

Ask for the all-in monthly cost at your parent's assessed care level, how often rates have risen, how many staff are awake overnight, who gives medications, whether the building is waiver-certified, and what would trigger a discharge notice.

Then check the answers against the DHHS roster entry, which our facility pages reproduce for every licensed ALF in the five counties, and ask to see the most recent DHHS survey.
